We’re delighted for the Cornish talent, Neil Eddy and very proud to be his Ambassadors, as he was selected by British triathlon to compete for Great Britain at the ITU World Triathlon grand final in Edmonton, Canada, and he brought home the gold medal! The achievement capped a superb week for Neil in Edmonton, having finished fifth in the Elite Men (25-29) ITU Aquathlon World Championships on Wednesday.
The GB international athlete said his gold medal win in Canada exceeded his own expectations. “Having finished fourth in the two previous World Championships I attended, I had one goal and that was to claim a medal. I knew I had a chance of gold, but so much can happen in a two-hour race.”
Neil competed in the Male 25-29 Age Group, Eddy was first out of the swim in 19:05, first off the bike in 57:45 before finishing off with a 35:06 10K run as he finished the standard Olympic distance in an overall time of 01:56:15, more than a minute ahead of runner-up, Craig Davis from Australia in 01:58:08.
“The conditions were very cold, so it was hard for all to get going on the bike and run. I biked well but had extra in the tank if I needed to. Going on to the run was quite tough with cold heavy legs, but I built up steady into the run to pace it well.
“The run was good for me, it was a slow run course with more than half of it on a trail and again I felt I had another gear in reserve if I was challenged.”
Neil added: “I am ecstatic with the result and to back up the previous week’s fifth place finish at the World Elite (pro) Aquathlon, this has been a great trip. I would just like to thank all the people and sponsors who continue to support me.”
British Triathlon Director for Age-Group Teams, Malcolm Westwood was delighted with Neil’s performance.
He said: “Neil’s gold medal is extremely well deserved. He’s been consistently close to the podium for several years and when I saw him exiting the water in first place, I was hoping and believing he could maintain his current good form that has seen him finish fourth in the British Triathlon Super Series and fifth in last Wednesday’s elite ITU Aquathlon World Championships. It was wonderful to watch him maintain his lead and cross the line as a very worthy World Champion.”
We couldn’t be more pleased for him, all that hard training has really paid off! neileddy.co.uk
